Really, this teams needs very little tinkering.
What about Tomy Womack? It was brilliant to bring in Cano and it was brilliant to move Womack to left field and Matsui to center but Torre did not stick to it. I think this was the one mistake in 2005. There was no consistancy with the lineup. Womack could have easily won the stolen base title and possibly the runs scored title, BATTING 9th!
Sign Matsui and Womack, play him in left and work the farmhand pitchers in. That's all.

Re: Cashman, now what...
Thu, October 27, 2005 - 8:40 AMSounds simple, Groggus, but I don't think Matsui can stand up to a full season in centerfield. Unless he accepts a day off every couple of weeks, he's going to break down and go into prolonged slumps as he has done in every season with the Yanks. The streak is great but he's not an iron man. He shows the wear and tear with two or three 2-week slumps every year. If he would only sit down once in a while he would easily be a .320, 35 HR, 120 RBI guy every season.
If Matsui plays CF and sits down once in a while, Bubba Crosby would be a great backup/part time CF and LF.
The pitching staff is where I disagree slightly with you, Groggus. It needs a major overhaul.
Mussina is no longer a given. He can be pitching beautifully and suddenly turn into a High School chucker who can't get anybody out. He hasn't been consistent in two years. He's a #1 or #2 pitcher on a second division team. With his inconsistency, he's proven recently that he is not a reliable big game pitcher any more. Not a knock on the guy...he's just older and less reliable. For a team that wants to go the WS again, Moose is at best a #3 guy and quite possibly a #4.
Johnson may or may not be the Big Unit ever again. If he's the Randy Johnson of 2005 again in 2006, then he can't be the ace of your staff. Too inconsistent, too bad too often. He might be a decent #3 guy if he doesn't return to #1 form.
Chacon, Wang and Small have to prove that they are the real deals and not just one season flashes in the pan. Wang looks like the keeper of the group. But I don't see him as a #1 or #2 guy right off the bat. Chacon could be the goods but his career record shows too much inconsistency. Perhaps it was the rarified air in Colorado and maybe he will continue to come up big in the Bronx. He looks to be the ace of the staff right now but he has to start strong and stay that way. Small is the dark horse. He had a great season but was starting to break down with continued use as the season went on. He may still be a servicable #5 guy but he looks to be the one guy from the magnificent surprise trio of 2005 that might not come back to form in 2006.
The minor league pitchers don't look too strong either. Proctor might become a good situational pitcher if he learns to throw strikes consistency.
The rest of the bullpen is a mess. We had to read the handwriting on the wall when Ramiro Mendoza came in to pitch during the last Red Sox series. They need a reliable lefty. They have none now. Leiter? A big maybe.
Jaret Wright? The very definition of Question Mark.
Gordon was way overused. Sturtze was a secret weapon that was overused so much that his secret was discovered and he turned into a punching bag by late August, early September.
Mo is Mo. No problems there but he'll be a year older and that's never a good thing.
So what is the staff? No #1, Maybe Chacon as #2, Johnson #3, Mussina #4 and Wang #5. Does Wright fit in? Is Small a starter or the long reliever?
If the pen doesn't get the major overhaul and turn up some strong reliable arms, 2006 will be a very sad season for Yankees fans. The combination of a weak pen and a manager who is weak in manipulating them will make for a 86-76 season at best, without a playoff spot.
This is only October 2005, so there is plenty of room for tinkering and to turn it around.

What about Pavano? -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Thu, October 27, 2005 - 8:50 PMCarsten, the pitching staff will be fine if healthy and if they bring up a few farmhands. Otherwise you make some good points.
I am a fan of Bubba Crosby. But start him in center field in the deciding game of a post season series after he had very limited playing time? And why was Tino on the bench as a chearleader in game 5? Both wrong moves. Bubba should get more playing time in 2006 as a sub for Matsui and I wish Womack but we know that will not happen because Cashman is shopping many opportunities for center field.
I want speed in the batting order to take preassure off the bombers. Cashman still needs my cell phone number. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 11:27 AMPavano is another of the question marks. Whether or not he ever pitches again...or pitches again successfully...is still way up in the air.
I agree that Bubba was placed in a tense situation by starting him in the playoffs. Instead of wasting a month by playing Matt (0 for 4) Lawton, Torre should have been giving a lot more playing time and experience to Crosby.
Tino? It would be nice to have him back but I think it will come down to who will take that roster spot, Tino or Bernie?
Womack is a nice enough guy and a serviceable player but he doesn't quite fit into the overall Yankees picture for 2006. They'll either get a LF or a CF and play Matsui in the other position.
All I ask is please, Hideki, please, take a seat once in a while. Sit down and watch a Sunday afternoon game against the Tigers or someone else. Your body needs the rest! -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 6:24 PMyup, agreed that Godzilla needs a rest down the stretch. Unfortunate the Yanks were in must win situations in 2005.
yup, yup, I may be the only Womack supporter in Yankeeville.
Hey, Ricky still wants to play!!! for cheap -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Tue, November 8, 2005 - 7:22 PMI think there are a lot of Womack supporters in Yankeeville but he simply doesn't fit in well with the makeup of this team. Steinbrenner isn't going to stand for a zero power guy playing everyday in his outfield. The days of Dave Collins and Jerry Mumphrey are long gone. I like Womack and would like to see him play more but I don't think he's going to be a Yankee when opening day 2006 dawns.
Ricky back in LF? Only if Donnie starts again at 1B. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Tue, November 8, 2005 - 8:23 PMright, the Ricky statement was a joke. Looks like the first move of the off-season was not to pick up the option on Tino.
Who does everyone want to play Centerfield??? -

Re: Cashman, now what...
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 1:52 PMRe: Who does everyone want to play Centerfield??
Bubba gets first my first vote based upon the current roster.
But wouldn't it be interesting to see free agent Johnny Damon out there in 2006? -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Cashman, now what...
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 6:35 PMNOOOOO! We would do best to play Bernie 162 games in centerfield. Damon has no arm and is not a threat on the bases.
Bubba is the guy for now but we know that Cashman will sign someone. I want speed on the bases. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 4:50 PMI kind of agree with you Groggus but bear in mind that we've dealt with no arm and no threat on the bases from the centerfield position for a number of years now. Damon at least poses somewhat of a left-handed offensive threat. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 8:17 PMhow about Brian Giles? If he can steal a lot of bases, I'm all for him. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Tue, November 15, 2005 - 9:20 PMMatsui, done deal. 4 more years. Still little more tinkering needed. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Wed, November 16, 2005 - 9:03 AMYeah, get rid of Torre... -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 9:54 AMMatsui in, Tino out...I think Bernie should ask Santa for a 1B mitt and he could get more playing time in 2006. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 6:46 PMOK, I gave some thought to out centerfield position and I am against a trade or signing a free agent. Let's go with Bubba and Bernie. Yes, I want Bernie back for 1 more year!!!
And let's see who makes a statement during spring training, like Cabrera?
I still want to see speed on the bases.
Now, pitching... -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 7:22 PMThe Yankees have never really been a speed team. They don't need someone to steal second because their problem the last few years is a terrible team batting average with runners in scoring position. They get enough guys on and enough guys reach second and third, they just need some hitters who can drive home runs with a timely hit now and then instead of just sitting back and waiting for home runs.
The Yanks never won with Rickey; and Knoblauch stole less bases with successful Yankees teams than he did with the Twins.
This is not a knock on A-Rod but we really need him to get those two out singles with runners on second and third more often. When you look at the Yankees' team power and team batting average you would think that they should score 80 to 120 more runs per year. I've grown weary of innings that begin with runners on second and third or bases loaded and no out and wind up scoring only one or no runs.
Bernie can't play every day any more. Sorry Groggus, but your wish is a pipe dream. Bubba can carry the load as the every day centerfielder and maybe...maybe...Bernie can play against the real tough lefthanders. But we all know that Bernie is not a great situational player so time on the bench could leave him rusty.
This team doesn't have many problems but in order to fix the few problems they have, some players are going to have to check their egos at the door.

Re: Cashman, now what...
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 8:29 PMGranted Bernie can't play everyday and Bubba deserves some more playing time. I asked for Torre to do the right thing out of spring training 2005 and place Bubba on the opening day roster and he did. Torre just screwed him up during the season and then along came ???? good I forgot his name and then Bubba lost more playing time. I just don't see a player that may be available via free agency or trade that would make the Yanks better in 2006. My wish is that Bernie signs on for another year and we enter spring training with as close to the same team as 2005 and work the youth in. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Wed, November 23, 2005 - 6:37 PMA lot of good ideas here. Bernie backing up in center and first would give him some extra playing time and keep him fresh. He can DH a little too. We'd need at least one more outfielder. We still need another strong starting pitcher and we have to shore up the bullpen. Hopefully we still have a shot at BJ Ryan -- has he signed with anybody else yet? -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Thu, November 24, 2005 - 9:09 AMBJ Ryan is still available. So is Pavano on his way out??? -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Sat, November 26, 2005 - 12:10 PMPavano out or in? Don't know what the Yanks plans are for him. Does he have the kind of stuff that could win 20 games for the Yanks if he's healthy? -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 11:03 AMRather than a Question Mark, I think Pavano is a key to the 2006 season. If he is healthy and can regularly pitch into the 7th or 8th inning, it will save a lot of workload on Mo. The problem with the ENTIRE Yankees starting staff is that they have all turned into "5 and fly" or "6 then sit" pitchers. The days of effective Stantons and Nelsons are gone. The bullpen can only sustain pitching 1 or 2 innings a game, not 3 or 4 as they were required to do too much in 2004 and 2005. Even if they sign Ryan as a compliment to Rivera, Mo and Ryan are only 2 innings worth of effective pitching per game and, even then, they can't pitch every day in every game. -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Thu, December 1, 2005 - 7:48 PMFarnsworth should be a great addition. What is going on with Gordon?
Personally glad to see Giles stay with the Padres and looks like Cashman is thinking to stay with the Yankeeeeee youth for centerfield. Bring Bernie back for another year to win the series then he can go into the hall.
Woah that opened up a completely new topic -
-
Re: Cashman, now what...
Sat, December 3, 2005 - 11:31 AMGroggus, Gordon signed with the Phillies. Now we're back in the same situation... a bullpen with Rivera and Farnsworth and not much else. As always, any new reliever will feel the pressure of New York so we can't count on Farnsworth until he proves himself, so really we have a bullpen with just one reliable reliever and only one viable arm (Farnsworth, we hope) to bridge from the shaky starters to Mo in the 8th or 9th.
Would be interested in seeing your new topic on Bernie and the Hall.
