The winter meetings are starting to perk up a bit...
Roger Clemens wasn't offered a contract by the Astros. Will he return to the Yankees in 2006?
The Yanks offered arbitration to Bernie, Al Leiter and Ramiro Mendoza. The plan is for all 3 to reject the arbitration and sign new contracts before the end of the meetings.
The team has also apparently severed ties with Kevin Brown, Alan Embree, Matt Lawton, John Flaherty, Tino Martinez, Rey Sanchez, Felix Rodriguez and Ruben Sierra. We knew Tino was gone and we might miss Sanchez, Rodriguez and Sierra. But the future is calling.
Can anyone suggest any free agent signings the Yankees should make?

Sorry Groggus! -

Fri, December 9, 2005 - 8:02 AMYou're right...I guess I was thinking they had severed ties with Womack sometime around last July. :) -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Mon, December 12, 2005 - 6:45 PMyou are right about that Allan. I do not see a free agent that makes sense. Hopefully Andy Phillips and Miguel Cabrera make the team out of spring training. -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Mon, December 12, 2005 - 7:38 PMPhillips I like. But if Bernie signs there may not be room for him.
Do you mean Melky? If they don't sign a free agent centerfielder, they might take Melky as a temp backup to Bubba. But I can't see The Boss allowing the team to go too long with two non-veterans covering center. -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Tue, December 13, 2005 - 12:41 PMWhat's this? Garciaparra for 1b? Very, very interesting.
Will it work? Could it work? It's worth a try....after all, it's George's money, not mine. -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Tue, December 13, 2005 - 6:06 PMMaybe, George would like Nomar to play short center field, like a soft ball team... -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Tue, December 13, 2005 - 8:20 PMoh shit sabai, that is toooo funny and right again Allan on Melky.
I really want to see the next full time centerfielder come up within the organization. Hey, The Boss better not spend big bucks for the short term in center. Maybe Damon is a good fit because he is a great leadoff hitter but I am against it. Jeter is a great leadoff. -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Wed, December 14, 2005 - 10:37 AMOkay, let's say they sign Damon and Garciaparra... could this be the opening day lineup?
Damon, cf
Jeter, ss
Rodriguez, 3b
Sheffield, rf
Matsui, lf
Garciaparra, dh
Giambi, 1b
Posada, c
Cano, 2b
Starters: Johnson, Mussina, Clemens (?), Wang, Pavano or Wright as the swing man/5th starter.
Bullpen: Small, Sturtze, Rivera, Farnsworth
Reserves: Williams (of,1b,dh), Stinnett (c), Phillips (inf), Crosby (of)
Anybody think this would be strong enough to finally reach and/or win the World Series?
I think the bullpen needs some doctoring...there's still a strong need for a reliable lefty. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: The Hot Stove League
Mon, December 19, 2005 - 2:34 PMThat was a waste of a dream....Garciaparra has apparently signed with the Dodgers. -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 9:46 AMWell looks like Johnny Damon is a sealed deal.
4 years in the pinstripes......it's just crazy to me! -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 12:25 PMDamon vs. Bernie.... An upgrade on offense and defensive range...a downgrade on throwing arm (whoda thunkit?). The move even makes the starting team "younger." It's not the greatest move they could've made but it's an overall plus. As for the money, it's George's, not mine. After all, a night at the Stadium already costs more than going to your prom, so what's an extra buck or two on ticket prices? -

Re: The Hot Stove League
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 1:12 PMTorre will probably start Bernie over Damon anyway... -
-
Re: The Hot Stove League
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 2:20 PMAfter years of Bernie and now Damon, Jeter is going to have to start playing short centerfield like softball teams do so the outfielders can reach someone in the infield. -
