The problem with Randy Johnson...

Like a lot of Yankees fans, I was totally annoyed and frustrated over
Randy Johnson's outing last night when the Yanks needed him the most.

He was brought here to pitch and WIN important games like last
night. He is being paid a significant amount of money for results.

What we have seen is at times a brilliant pitcher especially down the
stretch, but at other times, like last night, a pitcher that lacks
the bulldog mentality, who sulks when things get tough.

Mr. Johnson...this is directed to you.

Example, down 3-0, instead of being on the bench, you're down the
tunnel avoiding the camera shots. That to us Yankee fans, is seen as
being cowardly.
Some pitchers call on guts and some burning drive to fight through
adversity in the early innings of games. With you, if you get off to
a flying start, no problem...it's smooth sailing.
But you get roughed up early...your wheels fall off your wagon. And
it has happened in the past, too.

We know that your Divisional record is now 2-8 in your career. And
it also really grates us that the two wins were against the Yankees.

So, forgive us if we seem a little edgy on this Saturday as this is
being written.

You know, Randy...we haven't forgotten the brush-off you gave that
camera guy on the street when you first came here and the 'diva'
attitude you gave at the beginning. And even when you cleared the
air days later, everybody knew that you were coached on the responses
for the public.

You think we're stupid, Unit...but we're not.

Yeah, we're mean ol' New Yorkers who are unforgiving...we are
frontrunners and we don't except any losing whatsoever.

Yes. We are all George Steinbrenners.

But, we know the game...and know what everybody's being paid. And we
know when someone has great stats but no personal fortitude when
crunch time is here, we cut him no slack.

But when that gut check does come, we notice it...and we give our
hearts to them. Mickey Mantle was one, Joe DiMaggio and all the
greats. Recent players like Jim Leyritz and Bernie Williams always
hustled and won our respect.

You are a great pitcher, and some say deserving of the Hall of
Fame...but there are great players...and then there are 'Yankees.'
And with that comes honesty with the fans, your coaches and most
importantly, your teammates. It's your teammates that you let down
last night...mates like Bernie Williams, who won't be with us after
this year. He means a lot to us, and it would be a shame if he has to
end his Yankee career because you can't go to the well for him.

Bernie Williams has earned his status as a 'Yankee.'

After last night, you most assuredly do NOT deserve the status
of 'Yankee.'
