Most Overrated Yankee?

Now, don't get me wrong. I am a Yankees fan but there comes a point when you have to face the facts...

Isn't Mike Mussina the most overrated pitcher on the staff? For all the talk of how intelligent he is and how gritty he is, he's really only still on the team because of those few magnificent innings of relief against the Red Sox in 2003.

Other than that one great outing, he consistently overworks the bullpen because he refuses to try to consolidate his pitch count, going to 3-2 on almost every hitter. If he gets ahead of you 0-2, you can feel pretty secure knowing that the next 3 pitches will almost always be just out of the strike zone. He rarely tries to get you out with a strike and never tries to put anybody away when he's ahead in the count. He's come up pretty small in almost every big game he's had to pitch lately too.

I'm not sour on Randy Johnson because I tend to give every new Yankee at least one year to adjust to the team and New York. His season last year was pretty terrible (comparative to himself, not to everyone else) but I feel certain that he will try to turn things around this year.

Of the non-pitchers, I feel like we have a little too much unwarranted faith in Jorge Posada and Jason Giambi. Jorge because he's either a home run or nothing offensively (God forbid he should get on base with a hit or a walk because his baserunning seems like it could cost you 2 runs per game!!). Giambi because, well, just because he turned a great career into a what-coulda-been career with his stupid steroids.

Anybody agree or disagree with me?

Only a handful of games but I'm already getting the Posada/Giambi jitters.... they look old and rusty. Shades of 1965 and 1966 all over again.

        and Bernie should have retired.

Bernie is done and shouldn't be starting every day or nearly every day. But he deserves his curtain call season and he can spell some of the regulars once in a while.

Mussina may be due for a great season but overall he's been very disappointing for Yankees fans. Let's hope that a 20+ win season will turn things around for him in the eyes of fans.

They should have a retirement day for Bernie NOW, no matter what he does. He has lost his bat speed, he can't run that well any more, his fielding is atrocious with almost no arm. He is embarrassing himself, and it would be best if he retires gracefully, and they bring up one of the outfielders from Columbus, who did so well in Spring Training...

Giambi is starting to cool off...and cool off fast... I'm getting worried about 1B again.

Moose can shake off a lot of doubts if he can put together a solid season. He's got the good start but he has to come up big at least 65% of the time. 15 to 18 wins from Moose won't be enough...again.

It doesn't matter about any of the player's hot or cold streaks, what does matter is that the moron Clueless Joe Torre is making "decisions" that are losing ballgames. He has no idea how to handle a pitching staff, and his imbecilic double switching in the Mets series this weekend was the epitome of stupidity!! It may be hard to believe, but he's even a dumber manager than Willie Randolph!!!

Well, Willie learned at Joe's side, so we have Clueless, Sr. and Clueless, Jr. in New York.

I just wish that Torre would start stretching out the starting pitchers. Does he have to try to get Scott Proctor into EVERY game? The poor guy's knuckles are going to be scraping the ground by the end of the season. He's already showing too much wear and tear. Villone should be used more.

What's up with Farnsworth? Is he the 100mph version of Ed Whitson?

Well, Clueless Joe has rid the bullpen of poor Aaron Small, for some guy who was in Double AA earlier in the season. Both Aaron Small and Clueless Joe admit that Small is a starter not a reliever, and according to CJ, the Yankees need more guys in the bullpen.

I believe that if he had been given the chance, Small would have been a much more productive starter than Wright. Does anyone remember if Wright has gone more than 5 innings this year??

Reur comment, I'm waiting for Proctor to come up with some sort of arm problem, as CJ either uses him or has him warm up every day.

BTW, Clueless Willie is in a similar situation as Clueless Joe was ten years ago. He has an almost unbeatable team, so it makes him look good.

Torre has weakened his bullpen in every way possible. He pulls all of his starters too early. He uses so many guys every day. He lets certain guys rust.

There is no one in the bullpen now that I feel safe with on the mound. Mariano is still the very best but his appearances are so sporadic that he picks up one or two automatic saves every week but otherwise he sits helpless while the pen fritters away leads in the 6th, 7th and 8th inning time after time. Would the world come to an end if Torre had the guts to use Mariano to get 2 or 3 important outs in the 6th or 7th inning to save a game in the same way that Sparky and Goose used to do for us before the age of super specialists?

Proctor should sue Torre for premature aging of his arm. If he survives the season without an injury I will be surprised.

Villone has shown some effectiveness. So obviously we don't see him often enough. But you can be sure that he will be in every game every day when Torre decides it's time to wear his arm off.

I think using Farnsworth in the 8th inning is just some kind of ploy to guarantee that the 9th inning will either be tied or a save situation for Mariano. Leading by 5? Bring in Kyle in the 8th and Mariano can get a save by having only a 1 run lead in the ninth.

I had high hopes earlier in the season that perhaps Mussina would finally prove me wrong and live up to his expectations. But once again he has blown any hopes for a 20-win season. For a pitcher who is supposed to be so intelligent, why does he waste so many pitches throughout the course of a game? He gets plenty of guys to 0 and 2 and then, almost automatically, he will pitch the count full. Since he knows he's going to be gone after 100 pitches, I start to wonder if he's really afraid of the 8th and 9th innings and subconciously wastes pitches early in the game to insure that he will leave early with a lead and then leave the tough innings to the pen.

Thank the Lord in Heaven for Wang.
