Future plans...what about Bernie?

topic posted Fri, August 12, 2005 - 6:42 PM by  Carsten
Do you think Bernie will be with the Yankees next year? I'd love to see him end his career with the Yankees.

I just don't see him playing more than 50 games in center in 2006. Will he accept a back-up role?

More importantly, who is the Yankees centerfielder for the next 5 years?

The smartest thing that Williams can do is retire at the end of the season. He can no longer play the outfield, and should be used as a DH only...

His contract is up at the end of this year, isn't it?

Bernie has always been one of my favorite players - soft spoken, classy, and a great Yankee. If he does play next year, it will have to be as a replacement player (and I doubt it will be as a Yankee).

As for the next center-fielder, the cynic in me says that the "new millenium" Yankees will go out and buy an old, high-priced free agent and stick them in center instead of grooming Crosby to take over the position...

Bernie's contract ends this year but he had an option year for 2006. The Yanks already announced that they were not going to pick up that option. That makes Bernie a free agent at the end of this season. His agent has already announced that Bernie WILL be playing somewhere in 2006. That either means the Yanks will have to sign him to a lower contract or he will go elsewhere. It would be a shame to see him end up somewhere else for his last season.

Isn't Melky Cabrera our next Joe Dimaggio?

This is tough for me. Bernie has been my favorite for years. When Donnie Baseball retired, I was devastated. Bernie filled the void because he was very much like my previous hero. He played everyday, hustled, lept his mouth shut & played with grace.

It will be awful to see him in another uniform next year. I know his defense has gone down. I still believe in his bat though. I would love to see him stick with the Yanks as a part time DH.

The answer isn't Matt Lawton, that's fer dang sure!

Bubba has looked decent over the last few days. I wish they had tried using him weeks ago.

Maybe Bernie is having his last fling. He's looked pretty good for the last week or so. I pray that he will want to retire as a Yankee and stay on as the 5th outfielder and a DH for next year. I like the idea that he could try working out at 1B in spring training 2006. I can't see them keeping Bernie, Giambi and Tino anyway next season. If they stay with Giambi as the starting 1B-man, and maybe Andy Phillips as the defensive backup, couldn't Bernie fill in once in awhile. Between backing up at 1B and the OF and as a part time DH, Bernie could get anywhere from 200 to 300 ABs in his final season next year.
