I read an interesting editorial yesterday comparing Brian Cashman and Paris Hilton, and how they both throw away someone else's money without regard for value. The article discusses what Cashman has been doing, since he's been on his own, without George Steinbrenner's meddling. The sports writer mentions such sharp signings as Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano. He makes special mention of this Japanese pitcher, now in Tampa for pitching instruction, who was already on the downslide in Japan. (I have tried hard to forget his name, but I believe that it's Ogawa.) Finally, he states, and I agree, that the amount of money paid for Roger Clemens to sign was idiotic.

I don't know how many of you have seen the recent artricles about some of the big names linked to steroid use, but Roger Clemens name has been mentioned as has Andy Pettitte.

If some of you remember back about Cashman, he was originally hired by the Yankees as George Steinbrenner's gofer, and he was made GM because he followed George's orders.

Instead you are going to stay with pitchers too long ("to find out what we've got!) and use scrubinnis instead of your regulars. You could have wiped out the entire magic number by today and now it's going to take another week of winning to do it. Get a clue, Joe!

Without him, the Yankees would not have beat out Boston this season. He's the best defensive outfielder on the Yankees, and he always seems to get that clutch single or double to either drive in a run or start a rally. He' s presently batting 288 with 46 RBI's and 12 stolen bases. He is young, and with experience, he should only become much better.

Now, don't get me wrong. I am a Yankees fan but there comes a point when you have to face the facts...

Isn't Mike Mussina the most overrated pitcher on the staff? For all the talk of how intelligent he is and how gritty he is, he's really only still on the team because of those few magnificent innings of relief against the Red Sox in 2003.

Other than that one great outing, he consistently overworks the bullpen because he refuses to try to consolidate his pitch count, going to 3-2 on almost every hitter. If he gets ahead of you 0-2, you can feel pretty secure knowing that the next 3 pitches will almost always be just out of the strike zone. He rarely tries to get you out with a strike and never tries to put anybody away when he's ahead in the count. He's come up pretty small in almost every big game he's had to pitch lately too.

I'm not sour on Randy Johnson because I tend to give every new Yankee at least one year to adjust to the team and New York. His season last year was pretty terrible (comparative to himself, not to everyone else) but I feel certain that he will try to turn things around this year.

Of the non-pitchers, I feel like we have a little too much unwarranted faith in Jorge Posada and Jason Giambi. Jorge because he's either a home run or nothing offensively (God forbid he should get on base with a hit or a walk because his baserunning seems like it could cost you 2 runs per game!!). Giambi because, well, just because he turned a great career into a what-coulda-been career with his stupid steroids.

Anybody agree or disagree with me?

In an interview with the White Sox pitching coach, they discussed the success and turn around of some pitchers, such as Jose Contreras and Javier Vasquez. The coach explained that there were only slight modifictions needed with both to turn them into winning pitchers.
The team has also apparently severed ties with Kevin Brown, Alan Embree, Matt Lawton, John Flaherty, Tino Martinez, Rey Sanchez, Felix Rodriguez and Ruben Sierra. We knew Tino was gone and we might miss Sanchez, Rodriguez and Sierra. But the future is calling.

Can anyone suggest any free agent signings the Yankees should make?

What about Tomy Womack? It was brilliant to bring in Cano and it was brilliant to move Womack to left field and Matsui to center but Torre did not stick to it. I think this was the one mistake in 2005. There was no consistancy with the lineup. Womack could have easily won the stolen base title and possibly the runs scored title, BATTING 9th!

Sign Matsui and Womack, play him in left and work the farmhand pitchers in. That's all.

Okay, we've all got our opinions of Torre. We've said so in other threads about particular topics. Let's get it all out in the open here.

IMO, you have to give him his props. He's won and has a track record. So I don't think it would ever be fair to fire him in midseason unless he did something horrifically wrong.

There are some things that he does that I like. He is loyal to his veterans and he doesn't let one mistake automatically put a player in his doghouse.

What I don't understand are some things that seem obvious to me... Matsui gets hot when he gets some kind of rest, even if it's just as a DH. He gets run down too much when he plays LF every day. You'll see him go into these frequent week-long slumps. Can't Joe give Hideki a blow every now and then. I know he can't sit out completely because of his streak; but if he's 0 for 12 and swinging badly, then you can't leave him out there.

Sometimes I think Torre believes his starting pitchers are pitching softball games and shouldn't go past the 6th or 7th inning. Let's face it, with Sturtze and Gordon overworked, the starters have to try to hand off directly to Rivera -- for a few weeks in a row at least. What good is Mussina, Leiter, Johnson, etc., when they can't get past the 6th? The weak bullpen is going to give back at least 2 or 3 runs a game if it has to go 3 or 4 innings. If Moose has to leave after throwing 100 pitches, then he's never going to win 20 games as a big league starter.

Even rookies need a rest. Does Cano's average have to drop to .240 before he gets a couple of days off? The more he slumps, the more difficult it's going to be for him to come out of it. Come on, Joe, remember Womack can still play 2B once in a while.

Just wanted to get these things off my chest. Thanks for bearing with me, folks.

Like a lot of Yankees fans, I was totally annoyed and frustrated over
Randy Johnson's outing last night when the Yanks needed him the most.

He was brought here to pitch and WIN important games like last
night. He is being paid a significant amount of money for results.

What we have seen is at times a brilliant pitcher especially down the
stretch, but at other times, like last night, a pitcher that lacks
the bulldog mentality, who sulks when things get tough.

Mr. Johnson...this is directed to you.

Example, down 3-0, instead of being on the bench, you're down the
tunnel avoiding the camera shots. That to us Yankee fans, is seen as
being cowardly.
Some pitchers call on guts and some burning drive to fight through
adversity in the early innings of games. With you, if you get off to
a flying start, no problem...it's smooth sailing.
But you get roughed up early...your wheels fall off your wagon. And
it has happened in the past, too.

We know that your Divisional record is now 2-8 in your career. And
it also really grates us that the two wins were against the Yankees.

So, forgive us if we seem a little edgy on this Saturday as this is
being written.

You know, Randy...we haven't forgotten the brush-off you gave that
camera guy on the street when you first came here and the 'diva'
attitude you gave at the beginning. And even when you cleared the
air days later, everybody knew that you were coached on the responses
for the public.

You think we're stupid, Unit...but we're not.

Yeah, we're mean ol' New Yorkers who are unforgiving...we are
frontrunners and we don't except any losing whatsoever.

Yes. We are all George Steinbrenners.

But, we know the game...and know what everybody's being paid. And we
know when someone has great stats but no personal fortitude when
crunch time is here, we cut him no slack.

But when that gut check does come, we notice it...and we give our
hearts to them. Mickey Mantle was one, Joe DiMaggio and all the
greats. Recent players like Jim Leyritz and Bernie Williams always
hustled and won our respect.

You are a great pitcher, and some say deserving of the Hall of
Fame...but there are great players...and then there are 'Yankees.'
And with that comes honesty with the fans, your coaches and most
importantly, your teammates. It's your teammates that you let down
last night...mates like Bernie Williams, who won't be with us after
this year. He means a lot to us, and it would be a shame if he has to
end his Yankee career because you can't go to the well for him.

Bernie Williams has earned his status as a 'Yankee.'

After last night, you most assuredly do NOT deserve the status
of 'Yankee.'
> > > Jacob Luft, SI.com
> > >
> > > A bloated payroll. Mercenaries up and down the roster.
> > > A large Northeast city celebrating a World Series
> > > title. The media, with its East Coast bias, shoving it
> > > down your throats.
> > >
> > > The Yankees?
> > >
> > > Guess again. It's Red Sox, circa 2004. Or, as I like
> > > to call them, "Yankees Jr."
> > >
> > > Once this occult fascination with ghosts and curses
> > > dies down, many average baseball fans will wake up and
> > > realize who they've been rooting for this whole time.
> > > Talk about beer goggles. This morning after won't be
> > > pretty.
> > >
> > > The past couple of years many of us have portrayed the
> > > Red Sox in the same vein as the Cubs, lovable losers
> > > whose fans remain loyal throughout every heartbreaking
> > > moment. Cinderellas. The $185 million Yankees? They
> > > are the bullies, and we band together like lemmings to
> > > see them get their noses bloodied. But if the Red Sox
> > > are the underdogs, what does that make the Twins? Does that mean the Royals are downright Liliputian?
> > >
> > > The Red Sox have the largest payroll -- $120 million
> > > -- of any team ever to win a World Series. If you ever
> > > have accused a team of buying a championship, then
> > > that same charge has to apply to these Red Sox as
> > > well. With that much to spend, the surprise should be
> > > if they don't win a championship or at least come
> > > close every year.
> > >
> > > Of the four Yankees teams to win under Joe Torre, the
> > > highest payroll was $112 million in 2000. In 2001,
> > > Arizona shelled out $85 million for its title; the
> > > Angels spent $62 million for their 2002 crown; and the
> > > upstart Marlins' payroll was $54 million in 2003.
> > >
> > > Torre's champions, while highly compensated, also had
> > > more than a few homegrown players on them. Derek
> > > Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams
> > > and Andy Pettitte were drafted and developed by Evil
> > > Empire, Inc.
> > >
> > > How many among the Red Sox regulars can be considered "homegrown?" Trot Nixon and, if you want to count him, rookie Kevin Youkilis (two at-bats this postseason).
> > > It was the Red Sox who brought the Star Wars analogy
> > > into play with this rivalry when they labeled the
> > > Yankees the "Evil Empire." That would make the Red Sox the Rebellion -- Johnny Damon as Chewbacca? Darth
> > > Vader as Pedro's daddy? -- which just blew up the
> > > Death Star to free the galaxy of tyranny. But in the
> > > final analysis, that analogy doesn't quite work. It's
> > > more like one Death Star blowing up another.
> > >
> > > Financially, Boston and New York have distanced
> > > themselves so greatly from the rest of major league
> > > baseball that they can afford to use the other 28
> > > teams as their own farm systems.
> > >
> > > Nothing better illustrates this point than the tug of
> > > war these franchises waged over the services of Alex
> > > Rodriguez and his insane contract last offseason. Who
> > > else but the Yankees and Red Sox were equipped to take on that kind of price tag? That was just a preview of
> > > things to come. Every year will be an exercise in
> > > mixing and matching parts from downtrodden teams (i.e. Curt Schilling from Arizona) in hopes of fabricating a
> > > champion.
> > >
> > > Congratulations, Red Sox. You have figured out how to
> > > beat the Yankees. You have become them.

I was surprised that there hasn't been mention of this on the site...

Long time New York Yankee Organist Eddie Layton passed away on December 26th after a short illness.

He was part of the Yankees for 38 years.

I got to know Eddie as a public address announcer for the New York Police/Fireman Hockey game at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.

The game had moved from Madison Sqaure Garden, and Eddie had moved on from the Garden and was hired the previous season by the New York Islanders.

Eddie was our organist the first year we were there.

In 19 years, we were lucky to have Eddie on three occasions.

In conversations with him, I found out some things:

He served in the Navy, where his love of sailing led him to his purchase of a tugboat that he enjoyed for years.

Not many people know this, but Eddie loved electric model trains and had quite a display in his Forrest Hills home.

In his music, he was the organist for "The Secret Storm" on CBS, as well as "Love Is A Many Spendored Thing," also on CBS.

It was through CBS that Eddie came to the Yankees. CBS owned the Yankees at the time, and wanted a change. Eddie didn't understand baseball when he first came to the Yankees and in 1967, during a game, Mickey Mantle homered and started trotting down the first base line.
According to the press writers who heard it, Eddie was heard shouting, "Isn't he going the wrong way?!!! He's supposed to go left?!!" That made the papers.

Eddie still laughed about it in later years.

Also, he said something to me I found QUITE surprising.
"I don't play piano...only organ...the piano gives me trouble."

Go figure...but the man sure played organ!!!

When I heard that Eddie was retiring from the Yankees, I called him at home. He said, we wanted to spend some time seeing places and things.

I told him it wasn't going to be the same at Yankee Stadium without him.

Only last Thursday, the 23rd of December, I called Eddie out of a whim. He answered by speakerphone and sounded a little tired, but he was in a good mood.

I could hear the roar of his beloved trains in the background.
I exchanged Merry Christmas greetings and told him that we missed him at the Stadium.

Eddie said he missed it too. I said we would like to have him back at organ for the Police/Firemen game at the Coliseum again this year.
Eddie seemed to brighten a little, now that I recall.
"Let me know when it is, and we will see if we can," he said.

"During the meantime please wish the Police and Fireman my warmest regards, they are wonderful people."

"God bless you, my friend," I replied.

Then I learned of his passing the following Sunday.

When we play our game this year, when we mention those in the line of duty who gave their lives...we will remember Eddie, who gave his life in making sports more fun to enjoy.

I recently did a basketball tornament at the Westchester County Center, and at the end of the first quarter of each game I did, I played one of Eddie's tunes from his CD. And every time I did, I imagined it was Madison Sqaure Garden, it was 1970 and the Knicks with Willis Reed rallied to beat Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West and the Lakers.

It was my tribute to a dear human being who I will miss very much...who we ALL will miss very much.

God bless you, Eddie.

Save me a tune when I come to heaven to join you.
Nettles, Chambliss, Willie Randolph, Catfish, Reggie talking smack, Sparky Lyle shitting on cakes in the clubhouse, and Billy Martin fighting with George in the papers every day. I wish I were born earlier to experience this era in person, rather than just reading forty or fifty books about it.

My least favorite Yankees era is now. The players just aren't that colorful, and there's no drama as to whether the team will make the playoffs every year. It's a damn good team, and Jeter, Rivera and Posada will go down with the all-time Yankee greats, but I get a bad taste in my mouth, being the type of person that usually gravitates toward the underdog.

They dont have the lead, they have won nothing since 1918, so what is the deal with those unwashed, gap toothed dolts from the towne of beans?

I've been a lifelong Yankee fan, with clear memories of watching a game with my mom when I was 4, though she thought the Yankees a second rate team behind her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers*. When I read this tribe, I get kinda ashamed by what I read here. The Yankees have the second best record in baseball, and all I read here is bitching and whining. Torre and the boys in pinstripes aren't gonna hear us either way, but I'd much rather read about what an amazing play Jeter made, or how well Olerud's doing than the same tired-assed shit about how Torre's an overpaid idiot that doesn't know how to manage a team or a pitching rotation.

Joe Torre has led the Yankees to 6 WORLD SERIES in 8 seasons!!! Jesus ass-raping buddha, how much more do you fucking want?!?

Maybe you should read the bio on him on the MLB's website to get a feel for just how amazing a career he's had since coming to New York:

I have finally come to the conclusion that Joe Torre is a dumber Manager than even Stump Merrill. In past years, Torre had Zimmer attached to his hip on the bench, in order to help him think about what to do. Now, if you notice, he doesn't really discuss things with his Bench Coach Randolph, but rather makes "decisions" on his own. I believe that he is mentally incapable of making any real decision!!!

The problem is that Steinbrenner loves to surround himself with "yes-men". His favorite Managers are all not too bright, such as Lemon, Merrill, Dent and Torre. The one Manager that he had with some baseball sense, he ended up firing umpteen times. Now, he is paying this mental dwarf $5,000,000 per year to screw up things...
